Paving My Own Path: How Music Became My Life and Livelihood

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

Choosing music as a profession was never just about making a career; it was about answering a call that resonated deeply within my soul. When I picked up the saxophone, I felt an unbreakable sense of freedom and connection that nothing else could offer. This journey wasn’t laid out for me; it was one I had to carve out on my own. Without a safety net and losing my father at 13, I had to figure out how to navigate a life in music without the guidance and support many others had.

A Journey Without a Roadmap

Growing up, I didn’t have the luxury of a structured path toward higher education in music. My father passed away when I was 13, so I didn’t have him around to support or guide me. Without that parental figure, I had to figure out how to navigate life and pursue my passion for music independently. There was no one to provide financial support or point me toward conservatories and formal training programs abroad. However, I did have a passion for music that wouldn’t let go and an unyielding desire to make something of myself.

I took a leap of faith, dedicating myself to music full-time, pouring my heart and soul into every performance, teaching opportunity, and practice session. There were moments of uncertainty, times when I questioned whether I’d be able to sustain myself in this field. Yet, with each step forward, I found ways to build my career and earn a living through music.

Achieving Independence Through Music

Music didn’t just give me a sense of purpose; it gave me the means to live the life I wanted. The money I earn now comes from doing what I love whether it’s teaching young musicians, performing at festivals, or composing new pieces. It’s not just about the financial aspect, but about the fulfillment of knowing that I’m sustaining myself through my efforts in the art form I’m passionate about. Every paycheck I receive isn’t just a monetary reward; it’s a reminder of how far I’ve come, of the late nights spent rehearsing, the countless hours teaching, and the determination to keep pushing forward. I am proud that I’m able to support myself solely through music, providing for my needs and building a future on my terms.

Becoming a Knowledgeable Teacher

Despite not having the conventional pathway to higher music education, I didn’t let that stop me from gaining the knowledge I needed to teach. I became a student of the world, learning from every musician I met, listening to countless recordings, and dedicating myself to understanding the craft from every angle. Through years of experience and continuous self-education, I developed a deep understanding of jazz and music education. Today, I’m a woodwind professor at KM College, where I teach not only saxophone techniques but also the theory, history, and spirit behind the music. I draw from my experiences, blending traditional Indian teaching methods, like the gurukulam approach, with modern jazz techniques, giving my students a holistic and unique perspective on learning.

Overcoming the Odds

The path wasn’t always clear, and there were moments when I felt the weight of not having someone to guide me. I realized that this challenge shaped me into the educator I am today - empathetic, resourceful, and committed to helping my students reach their potential, just as I had to find my way. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t need a perfect background or a prestigious degree to become a knowledgeable and effective teacher. What matters is the dedication to your craft, the willingness to keep learning, and the desire to share that knowledge with others.

As I continue this journey, I’m not just looking to grow as a musician but to inspire others who may be facing their challenges. If you feel like you don’t have the resources, connections, or support to follow your passion, remember that there are many ways to learn and grow. You can create your path, and if you’re determined enough, you can succeed against the odds. Thank you for reading, and I hope my story resonates with you. Feel free to share your thoughts, or if you’re a creative person or a teacher, let’s connect, I’d love to hear about your journey too

What a story! Wesley was such a fascinating music teacher at APL Global School . He creatively worked with me at the School Garden to blend Music with Regenerative Agricilture with our students, who loved it!
